Remembering these episodes, David often returned to these roots, seeking to take books and magazines of contemporary life that reflected this color and language. Knowledge and Popular Mechanics magazines were the symbols of his growing up and he would often return to them to get inspiration. Energy Power: the Hen, Headgear Through the Ages, Knowledge and Was that the Human Thing to Do? are some of his most popular works (Sheerer & Sheerer, 1). David would often work with different materials and his collection of works was by no means complete. David earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the South Australian School of Art in 1980 and a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Tasmania in 1984.H David subsequently taught at the Curtin University of Technology, Perth and the ANU School of Art, where he was Head of the Sculpture Workshop from 1991 until his death (Canberra Museum, 1).Agnes Martin (1912-2004) was a minimalist painter known for her work in abstract or expressionist art. Although she was born in Saskatchewan and spent her early years in Vancouver, Canada, Agnes moved to the USA in 1931 and became a citizen in 1950. She had been educated at West Washington University and earned a B.A and M.A from Columbia University in addition to matriculating at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. Her early work was associated with Taos, New Mexico but she moved to New York after being discovered by a gallery and art owner, Betty Parsons. Martin moved out of New York to Cuba, New Mexico in 1967 and did not paint for seven years because she could not imagine painting anywhere else out of her NY apartment. She however resumed painting in 1974 and since then had been giving regular exhibitions of her work up to the time of her demise in 2004.Agnes’ work is characterized by her preference for grids, fine lines and fields of subtle color. At one time she painted only in black, white and brown but later moved on to light pastel colors. She preferred to let mistakes remain in her work and was more interested in portraying the spiritual and personal dimension of art. She was also interested in Taoist art. Agnes has also worked with shoes, shirt and other pieces of clothing- she labels this ‘clothed spacing’. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally in Germany, Austria and other
