The Centre for Visual Arts. Lopez artwork evidently demonstrates the aspect of ‘In lak’Ech’ or ‘You Are the Other Me’ in that they bring out a sense of community and autonomy. Self-dependency does not mean individualism or prioritizing self, but something that is not just intimately our own but that belongs to others as well. For Lopez, a Chicana, the images represent a journey, relationship, experience and prayers through La Virgen de Guadalupe and relates to her appreciating being Chicana from her grandmother and mother. The focus of this image was not just to demonstrate Chicana culture but kindle a conversation especially through the theme of immigration evidently presented here. The image measuring 14”

x 19” was one of Alcaraz’ most famous and was signed and framed. The work was done on paper, and used colours to bring out ruthless manner in which the immigration legislation of the Chicano was handled by depicted politicians. In addition, the image captured the hardships bore by the Chicano people while touching existing issues of reform in immigration, race, and gender. From the image, gaining immigration legislation as a Chicano was a life and death situation and one had to endure all forms of humiliation from the official and through the Chicano movement, immigration reforms have been achieved. The digital image uses satire to drive the message home and to have present day Chicano people appreciate their culture. From the two works of art, I have come to understand that the theme propagated is that of communicating to those in power that the once deprived rated culture of Chicano has now raised to authority. First, Lopez uses Guadalupe a powerful female icon characterized by serenity, passiveness and beauty. Instead of using the Guadalupe’s actual image, Lopez uses images of her mother and grandmother women that she can identify with and who she values as her role models and deserving respect and love. For the immigration officials, Alcaraz uses him to demonstrate individualism and lack of respect for differences in a satirical way that current Chicano people can take time to recall and laugh. Remembering such history is a worthwhile way of bringing attaching value to the current achievements of people in this culture. Additionally, comparing the benefits that comes from embracing differences makes brings out misuse of authority as passed by time and of no relevance at all. While Alcatraz’ image on “Show me your papers” reveals.
