To a larger extent, sstainable development encapsulates three different aspects of sustainability. Tese are economic, scial, ad environmental sustainability. I is important to note that these aspects form the basic premises of sustainable development. Tere is a consensus that a sustainable development entails an integrated and comprehensive approach to social, eonomic, ad environmental aspects and processes. Sveral initiatives on sustainable development initially dwelled on the economic and environmental elements. Hwever, te current discourses have encompassed the political, scial, ad cultural factors. Tis integration is critical for purposes of articulating trajectories that can be sustained, icluding addressing the dilemma of climate change (Newman, 2008).

Te idea of sustainable development emerged from two major sources. Frstly, te worrisome proof of ecological degradation, ad secondly, te emerging evidence of biophysical damage resulting from the increasing strain on the available resources. I is important to note that these two factors arose due to the larger wherewithal offered by economic growth, a well as the greatly disappointing record of the post-Second World War development initiatives. Te United Nations and other related agencies became about these matters for some time before eventually appointing the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) to find means of addressing these problems.

Te Commission concluded that the social and ecological disappointments had similar reasons and thus, rquired a shared response mechanism. Trough its final report in 1987, idicated a flood of interest in the experimentation with sustainable development. Te interest was renewed following the publication and adoption of Agenda 21 by an overwhelming majority of states at the UN conference in Brazil in the year 1992 2009).
