Hamartia in Hamlet, Gertrude and Claudius. Cannot register why his mother did not wait to get married to his uncle after moderate number of days when she could have rethought her decision. This made him even more stubborn in his madness. For Claudius, the hamartia mainly lay in his evil outlook which was rather calculating and very cold. He brought ruin to himself through his own rough behavior. In the last scene, one confirms his lust for power as the Queen dies from drinking the poisoned drink. He wanted to have all those killed who came in his way and this was not tolerable for anyone. Whatever Hamlet could do to save his family from drowning was the virtue in him which kept the mark of honor in him alive at the time of his death. Hamlet ensured that each and every rival should die with him if he was to leave Denmark without resolving the matter peacefully.

Claudius, however, hardly cared about his honor. He wanted power and wanted to end Hamlet’s life by spying him wherever he went. Hamlet’s helplessness became his strength towards the end of the play (Levy 51).Gertrude is Hamlet’s mother whose hamartia lies in being very submissive to her own husband. Since Gertrude was so innocent, she failed to see how she was being used by her own new husband. She considered Hamlet’s cry against Claudius as a phase which he would soon get over or as madness which would never workout. The hamartia which Gertrude has to endure does not change her stature as a mother. She cannot help her innocence in the situation (Maxwell 237).There are reasons behind the tragic flaw of each of the characters mentioned above. These characters have played a vital role in the plot distinguishing their personalities with the ignorance of one thing or the other. This is seen in form of the lust for power on the part of Claudius. Hamlet does not hesitate to question his mother’s piety towards her own husband who was dead and was also Hamlet’s father. It is not only when Hamlet chooses to shake the morality back in his mother that she realizes what she had actually done. Hamartia elevates some characters above their prior appearance in the play (Golden 155). The weakness of these characters is revealed only because of the nature of the plot. If King Hamlet was never murdered there would be no flaw of this nature present in the story. It would have existed in another. Hamartia in Hamlet, Gertrude and Claudius.
