Tobacco Cessation Needs of the University of Queensland Students

The aim of this Needs Assessment is to explore the tobacco-related issues on campus and the tobacco cessation needs of the University of Queensland (UQ) students, and staff (faculty and employees). Knowing the attitudes, culture, and policies about tobacco use on campus will help gauge where to in working towards a tobacco-free campus. This assessment will help: The aim of this Needs Assessment is to explore the tobacco-related issues on campus and the tobacco cessation needs of the University of Queensland (UQ) students, and staff (faculty and employees). Knowing attitudes, culture, and policies about tobacco use on campus will help gauge where to in working towards a tobacco-free campus.

This assessment will help: 1) Identify how and where students on campus are using tobacco; 2) Clarify the challenges and obstacles towards a tobacco-free campus; 3) Determine the policy-making process at the campus and the ways students can influence the process; 4) Provide an understanding of what tools and resources are available; 5) Identify who the relevant decision-makers are on the selected campus. For published studies, the following databases be searched: PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL Plus.

These databases will be searched for relevant publications in English through October 2007 with the following string: “ (smoke OR tobacco OR smoking) AND (prohibited OR prohibiting OR no smoking OR ban OR banned OR smoke-free OR tobacco-free) AND (campus OR university OR college OR campus-wide). ” Duplicates will be discarded. The following databases will be searched for unpublished literature to October 2007: base-search. net, scirus. com, and google. com. The same string from above will be used. Results will be examined in order by a filter until 100 consecutive titles showed no relevance.

Inclusion criteria for studies were based on study setting (preferably universities in Australia), study type (cross-sectional, cluster randomized intervention, or before and after intervention), and outcome measurement.
