The parents’ disposition when she made mention of the ambiguous and sometimes derogatory meaning of the word “disclosure” document, as the teacher emphasized: “To make sure you understand how my classroom will be run, I have written a disclosure document and made a copy for all of you”. The meaning and impact of the term “disclosure” is a bit heavy for under- and uneducated parents and a more simple term should have been used instead like the terms: classroom guidelines, homeroom house rules, or even general school guidelines. In mentioning and thanking the “translators” at the start of the speech, specifically mentioning: “I also want to thank the translators who are here to help us”, the teacher showed insensitivity to parents, particularly those who would question the need for “translators” for such a simple Teacher-Parent orientation. Some parents may have felt embarrassed for exposing their need for a translator. Also, making mention of the school web site and the use of e-mail is also a form of insensitivity to the intellectual and financial capacity of parents. Since majority is urban poor, the teacher should have expected that their direct access and knowledge to the internet is quite limited.Although Mendoza (2003) mentioned that internet access have now become more common among low-income families, the educational background of the parents should have also been assessed prior to the meeting through home visitations. Reasons for low parent visibility during parent-teacher conferences, particularly due to intellectual and financial insecurity, must be taken into careful consideration in future school programs and activities. Furthermore, the teacher should have also considered the fact that some parents may have learning disabilities that cannot be remedied by the provision of a disclosure document or the use of the internet.The teacher should also have dealt with individuals (through one-on-one interviews), and not group of parents, during or even after the orientation if possible. Given the aforementioned facts, these could still be remedied in the form of providing background information data sheets or questionnaires, with the translators helping them in filling out the forms. The forms should specifically emphasize the educational background and special learning abilities/disabilities of the parents.
