It involves creating and implementing an obstacle into one’s performance (Nevid, 2012). Such obstacles may promote the success or can give one a reason to fail. In the society, an example of self handicapping would be seen among the homeless people who get involved in drugs and alcohol. Such individuals get some much into drug abuse to an extent that they become disengaged from the life demands. Even though that is the case, such individuals know what the society expects from them, but they use the excuse of drugs to run away from fulfilling what is expected from the by the society. An example of self handicapping in the criminal justice system can occur when an individual who has been arrested by the police for an offense committed go ahead to fabricate lies so as to mislead the police. Such individuals come up with stories and theories that seem to be true and in the long run they end up convincing the police by pointing accusing fingers to other individuals. In criminal justice, this bias may occur when the jury decides that a bar owner is guilty of not preventing the fall of a client in slippery stairs after it rains even though the bar owner may not have had the ability to foresee a fall being caused by the rains. At the individual level, this can be seen when a student gets good grades and goes ahead to say that he or she knew she would get it after studying all units.External attribution is another important aspect.
