Te features of wetland soils are because of anaerobic soil bacteria, bth the facultative and obligate bacteria do exist in saturated areas of this kind of grounds. Wen soils are saturated, ad the air removed from soil pores, aaerobic bacteria become the dominant in the microbic community of the soil. Tese bacteria use the non-oxygen substances as their electron acceptors. Wen organisms respire, tey transfer electrons linearly from one molecule to another. Fom every transfer of electron, eergy is produced for the organism’s life processes. I wetlands, te organisms use a variety of substances as electron acceptors such as nitrate, mnganese, slfate and dioxide.

Snce ferric is quite common in most soils, aaerobic bacterium adds an electron to it resulting in ferrous iron. Sils containing ferrous oxide are white or gray in color while dryer ones are yellow or red. Te presence of a gray soil near the surface of the soil is an indication of a wetland soil. Mnganese, mjorly black in color are also indicators of wetland Cohen (1984). De to inefficiency of anaerobic bacteria in decomposition of matter, te wetland soils tend to be rich in organic matter than soils, te horizon of the soils are entirely composed of organic matter.
