Religion And Theology. These were the apologists for the slavery system. Some of the slave owners forbade religion in their plantations as they believed it would trigger rebellion among the slaves. Most of them forbade the slaves from learning how to read and write as it would give them access to the Bible and religious teachings (Pennstate World Campus, 2015). Religion played a huge role in maintaining the status quo and keeping everyone in their place in the society.Religion has also shaped the way that human beings relate to animals. For a long period, human beings have used animals for their benefit in terms of fur, meat, hoofs and even doing manual work for them. Groups have come up that advocate for animal rights. It is a controversial issue in that animals do not have a soul.

Animal activists argue that cruelty against animals in activities such as hunting and farming (Pennstate World Campus, 2015). The fact that animals did not have any souls did not give human beings the right to be cruel to them, and this founded the basis of a humane society towards animals. However, philosophers such as Gompertz argue that animals had souls, and hence he refused to consume any animal products. Although not a theologian Scully believed that animals should be treated with dignity from a more contemporary point of view. Scully argued that cruelty towards animals was immoral.Stowe used stores such as the famous Uncle Toms Cabin to share her feelings towards slavery and religion. She shared horror stories to make people see that slavery was immoral and deprived the people of having a normal life as families were torn apart, and people treated as mere objects (PennState World Campus, 2015). The horror stories were meant to scare people and to invoke sympathy among those who practiced slavery so that they could stop. She used religion to show that slavery was immoral and that the Bible did not advocate for people to be treated as mere objects. She believed that religion taught that everyone was equal regardless of the color of their skin and that selling and buying of human beings without caring about their feelings was very wrong.In conclusion, different philosophers have different views against slavery and cruelty to animals.
