Professionalism in Nursing. These elements all represent caring attitudes that a nurse and health professional can apply in order to gain the trust and respect of the patient and the public in general.Qualities which need improvement in my professional image are: teamwork, caring attitude, absent prejudicial attitudes, and patient-centered care. I noticed that, although I consider myself a team player, there are often times when I am not, most especially when I do not agree with the suggestions of my colleagues. And I also see other nurses apply this attitude when they do not agree with other nurses’ plans. I also noticed that I and other nurses as well, need to improve our caring attitude for the patients. I noticed that there are times when I go through my responsibilities in a routine and unfeeling way and without taking the time to apply a more engaged and caring relationship with my patient.

As far as prejudicial attitudes are concerned, I noticed that although I do not believe myself as prejudiced against those who are different, I often have a preconceived notion immediately upon meeting those who may be obese, mentally incapacitated, elderly, and those who are homosexual. I need to improve on my attitudes towards them and not hesitate in endowing them with the same type of care and concern I endow to other patients. Finally, I also need to apply a more patient-centered care in my practice. In my practice, I noticed that I often applied a fixed and formulaic standard of care. Similar patients were administered similar types of care or interventions. I failed to realize that even if patients shared the same affliction, they still possessed individual characteristics which may merit a slight deviation from the normal type of care I rendered to patients who shared the same affliction. This self-assessment has led me to believe that these are aspects of my practice I need to improve on.In order to improve my professional image, there is a need to improve the cooperation of nurses with each other. And in a study by Latham, et., (2008) the authors pointed out that by improving the relationship between mentor and mentee, it is possible to improve nursing relations with each other. Their study revealed that “dedicated mentors not only engaged in supporting fellow nurses but also assisted with enhancing the overall work environment for. Professionalism in Nursing.
