Success was restored when the United States military came in with more than ten thousand soldiers together with massive investments in various bases. Popular sentiments started to favour the United States and this alarmed the Canadian government, which wanted the Newfoundland to enter into a confederation rather than joining the United States. In 1948, the people of Newfoundland were given three referendum choices by the colonial power that included remaining a colony, becoming independent or amalgamating with Canada but being part of the US was not a choice. After a heated debate, the people of Newfoundland opted to join the rest of Canada as a province in 1949.Regardless of the difficulties in defining social class degrees in Canada’s society owing to the low levels of status consistency together with the fluidity that results from social mobility, it is possible to identify four general social classes (Angelini 48). Only a small percentage of Canada’s population is categorized as being in the upper class with most of their wealth being inherited. Their children attend private schools and they have immense power in relation to occupational positions. Even though this group was predominantly of British origin, its characterization is more widely distributed at present. The middle class in Canada consists of almost half the entire population of the country and because of the size of the country, this class has a lot of effect on the patterns associated with the culture of the country. There is a significant racial and ethnic diversity in the particular class that is not attributed by exclusivity and familiarity. The top half of this class is associated with upper managerial positions and other professional fields while the rest works in other white-collar occupations or are in highly skilled blue-collar employment.On the other hand, the working class makes up about a third of the population and has relatively lower incomes compared to the middle class with no accumulated wealth too as they get very little satisfaction from their jobs. The lower class accounts for the remaining almost twenty percent of the population and of this, a huge part has been considered as poor. Most of the people in this class are supported by welfare payments while others are incomes that are not sufficient to cover the basic needs,
