# Physics Assignment

If the correlation coefficient is negative, ten one variable is going down as the other variable goes up. Te correlation coefficient is the same if you swap the order of the variables you are considering. I the correlation coefficient measures 1, ten the two variables are maximally correlated. Wat this means in our case, i that the position x and the time t are maximally correlated, i other words, tere is a strong relationship between them so that if one goes up the other will do the same. Tis result of 1 for the correlation is a good thing; i means that our position measurements correspond to the time measurements.

I the correlation was lower, w would suspect in this case that our data somehow was not collected right. I addition, te Linear Fit dialogue box tells us the y-intercept is 0. Tis is the height of the basketball above our chosen origin (which was chosen down below the mans heels on the floor) when I started taking data; tis is right after the basketball has left the hands.

Te dialogue box also says that RMSE is 0. RSE stands for “root mean square error”. S this is giving us a measure of how good the linear fit is to the data points taken. W want this value to be as low as possible for a good fit. Snce our value is 0 to two decimal places, tis looks like a pretty good fit. 2 Examine the data to determine the very first value of the Y Velocity and the X Velocity. Tere are two values for because the velocity of the basketball has two parts, avertical (Y) part and a horizontal (X) part.

Te total velocity must be found be adding these two velocities in a particular way: Fom the VideoAnalysis box (in the lower right corner of Logger Pro), w have a table of 39 data points that were taken. Ech data point consists of one row of data measurements; tese consist of: tme, xposition, yposition, xvelocity, ad y-velocity data values. Te rows are also all numbered on the left hand side of the Wen I left click on the “1” row number, te first row is highlighted.

Ithen right clicked to copy and pasted that here: I LoggerPro, Imake a graph of y-velocity versus time by left-clicking on the y-axis of the graph (in the upper right hand corner of LoggerPro); ten scrolling down and clicking on “y velocity”. Te y-velocity has negative values, s I have to also left-click on the y-axis again, sroll down to “more” and left-click; ten I go to the box...
