If the correlation coefficient is negative, then one variable is going down as the other variable goes up. The correlation coefficient is the same if you swap the order of the variables you are considering. If the correlation coefficient measures 1, then the two variables are maximally correlated. What this means in our case, is that the position x and the time t are maximally correlated, in other words, there is a strong relationship between them so that if one goes up the other will do the same. This measurement result of 1 for the correlation is a good thing; it means that our position measurements correspond to the time measurements. If the correlation was lower, we would suspect in this case that our data somehow was not collected right. In addition, the Linear Fit dialogue box tells us the y-intercept is 0. This is the height of the basketball above our chosen origin (which was chosen down below the mans heels on the floor) when I started taking data; this is right after the basketball has left the man’s hands. The dialogue box also says that RMSE is 0. RMSE stands for “root mean square error”. So this is giving us a measure of how good the linear fit is to the data points taken. We want this value to be as low as possible for a good fit. Since our value is 0 to two decimal places, this looks like a pretty good fit.2) Examine the data to determine the very first value of the Y Velocity and the X Velocity. There are two values for velocity because the velocity of the basketball has two parts, a vertical (Y) part and a horizontal (X) part. The total velocity must be found be adding these two velocities in a particular way:From the VideoAnalysis box (in the lower right corner of Logger Pro), we have a table of 39 data points that were taken. Each data point consists of one row of data measurements; these consist of: time, x-position, y-position, x-velocity, and y-velocity data values. The rows are also all numbered on the left hand side of the table. When I left click on the “1” row number, the first row is highlighted. I then right clicked to copy and pasted that here:In LoggerPro, I make a graph of y-velocity versus time by left-clicking on the y-axis of the graph (in the upper right hand corner of LoggerPro); then scrolling down and clicking on “y velocity”. The y-velocity has negative values, so I have to also left-click on the y-axis again, scroll down to “more” and left-click; then I go to the box
