Williams (1988, P. 39) criticizes on the claims of utilitarianism to justify the idea that George declines the job offer. In the principle of utilitarianism, the best action is one whose consequences do overall good to the society. Therefore, this theory proposes that a person should weigh the consequences of their actions and the way they impact on the society. At this point, it is crucial to assess the consequences of William’s idea that George should take the job by evaluating the consequences of his actions. If George takes the job, he would be able to earn a salary and help his family, which can be termed as the positive side of this decision. However, he would be supporting a wrong action that may have dangerous repercussions for the society (Rolf, 2012). If he declines the job, someone else would take up his job and the work of research would proceed. Therefore, his actions would not have any positive consequences to the society. At the same time, he would do no good to his family as he would not be able to sustain his family (Williams, 2010). Williams seems to agree with the Kantian theory that terms integrity as the ability to do acts that are universally right. Since such research would be immoral, George should not take up the job.Glover (1975, P. 131) presents a different approach to assess the situation and a different basis for the scientist decision making path. He states that examining the side effect and the alternatives of taking the job would help to assess the situation. From this perspective, George has an alternative to look for a different job where he can contribute to the wellbeing of the society. In such a case, declining the offer would be useful as he would help his family with a job that is socially useful. Secondly, evaluating the side effects of the decision may impact the course of action. If George accepts the job offer, he will influence other scientist to take similar jobs that against the moral standards on science. However, if declines to take the offer, he will set an example and influence other scientists to stand on moral grounds despite the shortage of science job. Williams seems to accept the idea that Clover presents to justify why George must not take up the job.To a great extent, I agree with the idea that George should decline the offer even if such an action
