A nursing theory will analyze how medical centers can be better work places for nurses, how nursing can further its need to be an independent profession, or how some challenges encountered in the practice can be addressed.The Madeleine Leininger’s diversity and universality nursing theory like most of all the nursing theories aims at bettering the dissemination of nursing care to patients. The theory aims at eliminating barriers to provision of nursing care which result from cultural differences. This is chiefly so because in the modern world, nurses are faced by the challenge of cultural diversity especially due to the elevating cases of refugees, immigrants, and globalization. It is defined by three key pillars, all leaning on matters related to culture; the first pillar states that culture should be preserved in some instances to allow for maintenance of effective nursing. The second pillar states that culture should be maintained in adapting to nursing’s offerings, and finally, the third pillar states that maintaining culture can help in altering lifestyles for the good of patients (Leininger, 1988).In a summary, this nursing theory aims at providing nursing care practices that are universal and culture-specific thus promote the health of people. The key concept of Leininger’s diversity and universality nursing theory is addressing the gap which emerges between nursing and people’s culture. In it, the theory seeks to devise means which can retain people’s cultures but enable the dissemination of healthcare services (McEwen & Wills, 2011). This theory is chosen in that it is a mid-range theory covering a critical barrier to effective nursing practice, which is culture.The key terms and concepts rotate about culture, care and nursing, all of which have definitions created under this theory. Care as provided for in this theory is offering aid to needy others in either improving their health conditions, or face peaceful death. Culture on the other hand refers to common beliefs shared by a particular group and which guide their patterns of life. Diversity is used to refer to the variations that exist between cultures or different people. The term universality points at achieving a common ground even where cultural diversity exists (Sagar, 2012).The above definitions give rise to a relationship or interplay between them.
