Energy is released from this splitting, in the form of radiation and heat. Around 3-4 neutrons are released in the process and these split more nuclei, setting off a chain reaction (Craddock 119).The USSR’s nuclear plant at Obninsk became the first nuclear plant to produce power in the world for a power grid, producing some five MW of power. Calder Hall in the English region of Sellafield became the first commercial station to produce electrical-nuclear energy, with a capacity initially of 50 MW, later revised to 200MW (Craddock 120). The US initially used nuclear power for the propulsion of aircraft carriers and sub-marines.Proponents of nuclear energy insist on the necessity of an alternative in a world thirsty for energy. Economically it makes sense, according to them, saying that safety risks are all in the minds of the public, fermented by Chernobyl and Fukushima (Horgan 4). Their opponents point to the astronomical costs being too dear for the justification of the sobering hazards. Proliferation is also a risk (Jordan-Korte 78). Nuclear power has several advantages. Primarily, its generation emits relatively depressed amounts of CO2. This decrease in the amounts of a potentially lethal green house gas in the atmosphere, in turn, aids in the gradual correction of global warming. The second argument for the advancement of nuclear energy production is that it is available readily. It has already been developed and does not require a lot of money for research. In addition, a single nuclear power plant can produce high amounts of energy for electricity generation (Craddock 99). These arguments show us that while initial costs are high, the benefits dwarf the costs. However, nuclear power has several inescapable disadvantages. Radioactive waste, from the nuclear reactors, is an un-resolved problem. These wastes remain extremely hazardous for thousands of years! The risks involved are also high, with accidents occurring. While accidents are far in-between, consequences are devastating and catastrophic. While security standards are high, 100% safety is impossible. More nuclear plants equally increased probability of malfunction or failure. Nuclear plants and their waste are a dream of a target for terrorists. A 9/11 type of attack on a nuclear plant would be apocalyptic. On top of this, nuclear waste obtained by terrorists,
