Energy is released from this splitting, i the form of radiation and heat. Aound 3-4 neutrons are released in the process and these split more nuclei, stting off a chain reaction (Craddock 119). Te USSR’s nuclear plant at Obninsk became the first nuclear plant to produce power in the world for a power grid, poducing some five MW of power. Clder Hall in the English region of Sellafield became the first commercial station to produce electrical-nuclear energy, wth a capacity initially of 50 MW, lter revised to 200MW Te US initially used nuclear power for the propulsion of aircraft carriers and sub-marines.

Poponents of nuclear energy insist on the necessity of an alternative in a world thirsty for energy. Eonomically it makes sense, acording to them, sying that safety risks are all in the minds of the public, frmented by Chernobyl and Fukushima (Horgan 4). Teir opponents point to the astronomical costs being too dear for the justification of the sobering hazards. Poliferation is also a risk (Jordan-Korte 78). Nclear power has several advantages. Pimarily, is generation depressed amounts of CO2.

Tis decrease in the amounts of a potentially lethal green house gas in the atmosphere, i turn, ads in the gradual correction of global warming. Te second argument for the advancement of nuclear energy production is that it is available readily. I has already been developed and does not require a lot of money for research. I addition, asingle nuclear power plant can produce high amounts of energy for electricity generation (Craddock 99). Tese arguments show us that while initial costs are high, te dwarf costs.

Hwever, nclear power has several inescapable disadvantages. Rdioactive waste, fom the nuclear reactors, i an un-resolved problem. Tese wastes remain extremely hazardous for thousands of years! Te risks involved are also high, wth accidents occurring. Wile accidents are far in-between, cnsequences are devastating and catastrophic. Wile security standards are high, 100% safety is impossible. Mre nuclear plants equally increased probability of malfunction or failure. Nclear plants and their waste are a dream of a target for terrorists. A9/11 type of attack on a nuclear plant would apocalyptic. O of this, nclear waste obtained by terrorists, ...
