My wife could save me some time by dropping the kids of to school. Seepishly I asked her to do so. Tis request was met by a scowl. Iknew she would do it, bt it meant her deviating from her route to office. Iwas still to answer for coming home so late last night, ad now this. Iwould pay the price later this evening. Ikissed my kids bye. Te deep sense of guilt I felt made me avoid my wife’s eyes, a I ran for the door, pcking briefcase and car keys.

A I started the car I recalled that I had taken the budgeting folder out of my briefcase the previous morning to go through it, ad it was on the hall table. Igot out of my car and rushed back to the house. Iwas met by the wondering look of my kids and the knowing look of my wife. Wth a wry smile on her face, se handed me the folder and I bolted out of the door, bck to the car. Sarting it once out of the garage onto the road.

Ilooked at the gauges in the car and groaned again. Iwas almost out of gasoline. Flling gasoline meant more time lost, bt with what was in the tank I would not reach office. S I rolled into the first l bunk to learn that on Monday morning more than the normal number of people filled gasoline. Ipatiently I waited in the queue, crsing the slowness of the operator. Hurs not minutes seem to tick by while I got to my turn fill Bck on the road, m plans of a swift drive to office were dashed.

Havy traffic rolled forward in my direction, ad all I could do was flow with it in the direction of my office. A eternity seemed to pass before I reached the turn-off to my office. A I was late the parking lot appeared full. Ihad to drive around to find a parking slot to park my car. Mre time lost. Nthing seemed to be working for me. Mrphy’s Law appeared to be in Irushed to lift and waited for the doors to open.

Iclambered into the lift along with the rush of other late arrivals. Gt off at my office and reached my cubicle. Iplaced my briefcase on my table and looked at my watch. I was twenty-eight minutes after nine – twenty-eight minutes late for the appointment with my boss. Isat down in my chair and ran my hand through my hair. Icursed my getting up late. Igradually resigned myself to the firing that could be expected from my boss. door to my opened.

Isaw my boss framed in it. Iexpected to see fury on his face and was flinching to receive the first. ..
