Although I really enjoyed each musical composition, my favorites are the first, second and seventh movements. Holst referred to this work as "a series of mood pictures,” where Mars serves as a “rocky and tormenting beginning” (Taylor, 2007, p. The main musical idea here is of a “brutally rhythmic figure” of five beats that are relentlessly hammered out, and the principal theme is presented in triads making movement in “chromatic steps” with no specific harmonic purpose to it, whereas the second theme showcases the “flourish of trumpets” as an asnwer to the “tattoo in the tenor tuba” (Music Sales Classical, 2014, p.Furthermore, the 5/4 beat of Mars actually presents the feeling of unease and discomfort felt during the chaos of an impeding war. The tempo used in this piece is reflective of allegro, and what I like most about the piece is its loud use of brass and the frequent percussion accents. Holst presents war as a sort of mechanised horror in this piece, and the use of Mars for this is quite smart, as the planet is indifferent to life as well as death, just like a war is. When compared with similar themed musical compositions, people believe that this movement is the “the most devastaing piece of music” ever composed (Taylor, 2007, p. However, as far as I am concerned, I get the feeling this movement actually depicts the birth of a child, where the war is being fought side by side by the mother and her baby, so that the latter can enter this new world. At certain points in the composition, it is seen that the music is quite powerful and sort of has a tone of destruction, that can be seen as the mother pushing her child out of her womb. The little calm theme that come in between can be seen as the mother stopping the push process and taking deep breaths.
