His wife, Janne Herring, cnvinced Charlie Wilson to move away from his politically indulgent life and support the Afghans against the Soviet forces. Aong those he helped was Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operator Gust Avrakotos, wo was a very aggressive intelligence staff against the Soviets, i getting funds and equipment to be sent to the Afghan insurgents. Tis in turn allowed the CIA’s Special Activities Division (SAD) to provide proper training, fnding and equipment to the Afghan Mujahedeen fighters to deal with Soviet military forces, epecially their heavy Carlie Wilson was able to convince the United States government to provide massive support of money, mterial and training to the Afghan fighters, wich greatly troubled the Soviet occupiers.

Eentually, Pesident Ronald Reagan held his state doctrine that further expanded aid to any resistance against the Soviet Union. I the end, te Soviet forces left Afghanistan, ad the country was controlled by the Taliban regime afterwards. Te Soviet-Afghan War of 1979 was a textbook example of how international policies could have short-term gains, bt long-term damages. Te US sought on the Soviet Union ever since it supported the North Koreans during the Korean War of the 50’s and the Vietnam War during the 60’s, bth of which caused much loss and humiliation to the US.

Hnce, wen it was found that the Soviet Union was going to invade Afghanistan during the late 70’s, te United States wanted to find a way to do damage to the Soviet Union without getting directly involved. A a result, tey provided advanced weapons and training to the Afghan fighters. Tough the support the Mujahedeen made the Soviets leave Afghanistan dismayed, tat eventually led to the rise of the Taliban regime and Al-Qaeda.

Al of this resulted years later to the bombing of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001. Te film Black Hawk Down is a slightly accurate account of the United States heavy involvement in the war within Somalia, minly during the Battle of Mogadishu, i support of the United Nations’ peace-keeping operations in the region. Te story focuses on the missions of the Army Rangers, Delta Force, ad the Special Operations Aviation Units.

Fr the three US forces mentioned, wat was supposed to be a simple and quick capture and extraction mission turned into a long, butal rescue attempt. ..
