His wife, Joanne Herring, convinced Charlie Wilson to move away from his politically indulgent life and support the Afghans against the Soviet forces. Among those he helped was Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operator Gust Avrakotos, who was a very aggressive intelligence staff against the Soviets, in getting funds and equipment to be sent to the Afghan insurgents. This in turn allowed the CIA’s Special Activities Division (SAD) to provide proper training, funding and equipment to the Afghan Mujahedeen fighters to deal with Soviet military forces, especially their heavy weapons vehicles.Charlie Wilson was able to convince the United States government to provide massive support of money, material and training to the Afghan fighters, which greatly troubled the Soviet occupiers. Eventually, President Ronald Reagan held his state doctrine that further expanded aid to any resistance against the Soviet Union. In the end, the Soviet forces left Afghanistan, and the country was controlled by the Taliban regime afterwards. The Soviet-Afghan War of 1979 was a textbook example of how international policies could have short-term gains, but long-term damages. The US sought for revenge on the Soviet Union ever since it supported the North Koreans during the Korean War of the 50’s and the Vietnam War during the 60’s, both of which caused much loss and humiliation to the US. Hence, when it was found that the Soviet Union was going to invade Afghanistan during the late 70’s, the United States wanted to find a way to do damage to the Soviet Union without getting directly involved. As a result, they provided advanced weapons and training to the Afghan fighters.Though the US support of the Mujahedeen made the Soviets leave Afghanistan dismayed, that eventually led to the rise of the Taliban regime and Al-Qaeda. All of this resulted years later to the bombing of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001.The film Black Hawk Down is a slightly accurate account of the United States heavy involvement in the war within Somalia, mainly during the Battle of Mogadishu, in support of the United Nations’ peace-keeping operations in the region. The story focuses on the missions of the US Army Rangers, the Delta Force, and the Special Operations Aviation Units. For the three US forces mentioned, what was supposed to be a simple and quick capture and extraction mission turned into a long, brutal rescue attempt
