Preventing my parents from initiating confusions in communication became my obligation. At the time, I thought that my actions were saving my parents and myself from embarrassments.In her narratives, Tan blames her mother for limiting her progress in her study of the English language. However, for me, the imperfection of my parents’ linguistic skills pushed me to a higher level in my studies of the English language. In an attempt to hide their inadequacy and to prevent embarrassments, I caught a platform to practice the English I had learned from school and by so doing, I improved my communication skills.Again, I had to act like a grown up person as I was forced to converse with adults. I was thus forced by the situation to use acceptable English language and not the usual slang language associated with teenagers and young people. Through this way, I improved my knowledge of the official English language thus ending up being the best in my class in the English subject. Due to my knowledge of the English language, my class teacher choose me and some of my classmates in an English language program. I solved problems like word analogies and fill-in-the blanks in the program, which Tan claimed were problems to her. My experiences as I represented my parents in communications and the motivation I acquired due to the duty I gave myself helped me to understand and solve those English questions without much complicatedness.When I flash back to the time I was a teenager, I am embarrassed by the way; I handled my parents. I remember I was usually embarrassed to invite my dad for fathers’ days in my school. I was unable to stomach the fact that my father was going to embarrass me in front of my friends and my classmates. Nonetheless, the must attendance that my school required of every parent ensured that my dad was present in every other father’s day. Despite, his usual presence, he did not embarrass me, as he is a less talkative person. During any event in school, he would come for a short time. Most of my friends did not thus ever discover that he did not know much English. For those who discovered, they were also in the same situation as I was, and thus, they did not make fun of him. However, during one father’s day, my father was called upon to give a speech. On that day, I felt an embarrassment that was almost irrepressible the moment I heard my class teacher called up the name
