Moreover, advances in medical technology have contributed to the survival rates of infants and premature babies. In the past century, premature babies did not have any chance of survival. However with the development of incubators and intensive care units, infants cannot only survive the lack of proper function due to their young age, but also grow into normal babies, without any crippling functional disability. Respiratory Distress Syndrome, a condition where premature babies do not have proper breathing function due to the lack of production of adequate amounts of surfactant in their lungs. In this case, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is administered to the baby, which uses an apparatus that resembles the lungs in their respiratory function. A miracle made possible by medical technology was that a baby aged 21 weeks and six days only and weighing a mere 10 ounces was the youngest baby in the world to survive (Sneddon, 2008). This cannot be achieved without medical technology.Technology has not only aided human beings in having a longer life and in providing quick relief from their medical condition but also has made significant advances in medical research. Public health genetics has made use of genetic technology to prevent diseases and to harness in the cause of promotion of health (Stewart, Brice & Burton, 2007). Genetics deals with the study of the genes and how characteristics are passed from a parent to his offspring. Medical technology has helped to discover the molecular mechanisms that are associated with genetic disorders and to alter specific portions to repair defects (LeVine, 2006). Replication of DNA, translation and protein formation as well as the expression of genes and the complex biochemical processes that are regulating it, are all better understood in today’s world than they were a few decades ago. Diseases like cystic fibrosis are now better treated than ever. PGD allows for the timely detection of genetic defects that are the reason for inherited disease in human embryo before they are implanted, leading to healthy pregnancies (Panicola, 2007). However with the new horizons that medical technology has tapped, there is also an emergence of many controversies. Genetic engineering has also made it possible to manipulate genes to produce certain desired effects. However this can have adverse side effects on human beings at times. Research
