Management Today - In Relation to Management Theories. Are: Labor specialization, authority, discipline, unity of command and direction, individual interests, remuneration, centralization, line of authority, order, equity, personnel tenure, initiative and esprit de corps (Vector Study, 2008). Yaameen was asked about these characteristics and functions individually and whether or not he exhibited them, the results were manifold. It can be concluded that he bears or at least tries to own the characteristics of labor specialization, authority, discipline, order, initiative and esprit de corps, while it is not possible for him to handle individual interests and unity of command because he faces time pressure and his senior management and the audit department sometimes disable him to maintain unity of direction and authority.

In his position in management hierarchy he is not directly related to remuneration and personnel tenure, and these are not in his hands. However, taking up the role of a coordinator, he makes sure that he communicates the problems of the employees to the higher authorities.The responses from the interview show that most of the functions of the manager are similar to those described by Fayol. From among the five principles, almost all are practiced by Mr. Yaameen to some extent. However, the function of is somewhat left un fulfilled due to pressure of time and limited chances of direct interaction with the employees due to work load.Talking about the fourteen principles of management, the interview has revealed that many of these are also being practiced in some form. For instance, the principles of discipline, order, division of labor and centralization were found to be in use. The principles of remuneration and personnel tenure however are beyond his grasp since his organization is structured in a way which does not leave him in charge of these. This is probably due to the fact that today’s organizations are very fast and management itself has division of labor in it. Certain sections of the management are responsible only for certain components of management. Another principle, i.e unity of authority is also not being practiced. This may be due to the systems of monitoring and audit internally devised by the organization.According to Olum (2004), the five principles of Fayol are still widely in use and the fourteen principles are also being applied in many organizations partly or wholly.
