All the critical dimensions are related to the center circle that surrounds the sacred stone. Each outer wall is nearly as long in length as the dome’s diameter and its height from the base of its drum. Te golden dome that crowns the Dome of the Rock was originally made of gold, bt was replaced with aluminum which is now covered with gold leaf. Tere is a full moon decoration piece on the top of the dome which shows the familiar moon symbol of Islamic Religion. Te shrines decorated by multicolored tiles; te lower half of the exterior is white marble.

Te outer side walls are made of porcelain and they mirror the octagonal design. Tey each measure approximately 60 feet wide and 36 feet high. Bth the dome and the exterior walls contain many windows. Tere are Quranic verses inscription around the octagonal part of the Dome of the Rock. A this doom was intended to be the shrine for pilgrim therefore it has quite a vast area space inside it to accommodate the pilgrims. Tere arched wall inside the shrine which follows the exterior shape.

A open space between this and the central circle forms the inner ambulatory around the Rock. Te area between the inner wall and exterior wall forms a smaller, oter ambulatory. Te two ambulatories recall the ritual circular movement of pilgrims around the Kaba in Mecca. Te interior of the golden dome has floral decorations in red and gold, a well as various inscriptions. Te mosaics of the interior are an exotic garden, wich may shows the gardens of as in Islam.

Clumns of different sizes are supporting the inner octagon and the center circle. Tere are carved ceilings on either side of the inner octagon. Tere is a small, fat ‘mihrab’ or niche which serves the function of showing the direction of Mecca. Tis Doom of Rock is a very good specimen of Islamic architecture and a number of buildings have been designed as copies of the Dome of the Rock all around the world.
