High conductivity is also one of the features of the area. Te next region has particularly high quantities of chloride and sodium. Tese ions are found in a number of areas: acluster from Slough to Maidenhead, fund in Hounslow, Saines and Esher. I is believed that sodium most likely comes from road de-icing. Stes 1560 and 1546 exhibit high proportion of sulphates, clorides and magnesium. Oher unusual features, lke elevated quantity of dissolved oxygen and chlorinated hydrocarbons are also one of the characteristics of the area. Ntrate anion values in the drinking water exceed the standard at four sites. Tey have been detected in the regions close to the Thames, te river Lee and to the East of Luton. Ntrogen in the form of ammonia is not present in gravels. Nvertheless, i has been detected on every site at once.

Uually, amonia is found at sites far from Chalk outcrop. Hgh nitrate and ammonia concentrations usually followed by high iron quantities. I most cases, al three ions are found together. Hghest iron quantities have been detected at sites 1558 and 0565. Mnganese concentrations in these boreholes are also elevated. Te site 0722 is interesting. Nt only has it very high boron concentrations, bt it also present elevated quantities of manganese and nitrate. Bron is used in washing powders and detergents, cnsequently its concentration leads to conclusions about sewage T conclude with Mid-Thames Valley Gravels, i is important to state that since 1984 35 organic compounds have been detected in the water.

Hlf of these compounds were detected once or twice in small amounts. Hwever, tere were cases when the amount of the organic compound was more than 5% from the analysed sample. Te list of organics include atrazine, clortoluron and isoproturon (Gomme, Je and Buss 10). Fgure 4 represents the ground water quality monitoring points in the Lower Greensand.
