High conductivity is also one of the features of the area.The next region has particularly high quantities of chloride and sodium. These ions are found in a number of areas: a cluster from Slough to Maidenhead, found in Hounslow, Staines and Esher. It is believed that sodium most likely comes from road de-icing. To support the statement sites 1546 and 0722 can be mentioned. They are located at industrial sites in close proximity to major road junctions. Moreover, sites 0535 and 0648 are close to a highway and also manifest elevated sodium amount.Sites 1560 and 1546 exhibit high proportion of sulphates, chlorides and magnesium. Other unusual features, like elevated quantity of dissolved oxygen and chlorinated hydrocarbons are also one of the characteristics of the area.Nitrate anion values in the drinking water exceed the standard at four sites. They have been detected in the regions close to the Thames, the river Lee and to the East of Luton. Nitrogen in the form of ammonia is not present in gravels. Nevertheless, it has been detected on every site at least once. Usually, ammonia is found at sites far from Chalk outcrop.High nitrate and ammonia concentrations usually followed by high iron quantities. In most cases, all three ions are found together. Highest iron quantities have been detected at sites 1558 and 0565. Manganese concentrations in these boreholes are also elevated.The site 0722 is interesting. Not only has it very high boron concentrations, but it also present elevated quantities of manganese and nitrate. Boron is used in washing powders and detergents, consequently its concentration leads to conclusions about sewage pollution.To conclude with Mid-Thames Valley Gravels, it is important to state that since 1984 35 organic compounds have been detected in the water. Half of these compounds were detected once or twice in small amounts. However, there were cases when the amount of the organic compound was more than 5% from the analysed sample. The list of organics include atrazine, chlortoluron and isoproturon (Gomme, Joe and Buss 10).Figure 4 represents the ground water quality monitoring points in the Lower Greensand. The Lower Greensand is the South region of the London Basin and is found to the South West from London. The area includes several towns.
