Advertisements and Unhealthy Consumption Habits

Media is creating unachievable or unrealistic body ideals for both genders. Male society, for instance, has changed their preferences and thin-bodied female counterparts are idealized. This further places a greater pressure on women to have a slim body and perfect physique to attract the male counterparts and be popular and appraised for their physical beauty. These impacts are not limited to the female members of the society, but male counterparts are equally impacted. The male members aim to achieve a well-built and muscular body as exposed in the advertisements and other media content. A recent survey report suggests that muscle-enhancing supplements are commonly used by teenagers, both male and female.

The most common behaviors, according to the survey, include alteration of dietary habits, excessive exertion to burn calories, use of protein powders, consumption of steroids and other muscle-enhancing materials.  The survey findings reveal that 34.7% of the sample population used protein powders or shakes and around 6% claimed the consumption of steroids. The use of muscle-enhancing supplements and habits are commonly found in the male members of the sample population (Eisenberg, Wall, and Neumark-Sztainer, 2012). Hence, the achievement of an ideal male body is affecting the daily choices and intakes of male as well. Quenqua (2012) further highlights that the recent trends towards an idealized female and male body are to have a fat-free or thin physique. To attain a thin body, female members of the society are harming their health by being caught up with medical issues like anorexia or depression. Similarly, male members are equally influenced by the illusionary male image created by advertisements and adopt artificial muscular body by using steroids and other easily available supplements that marketers support creatively (Quenqua 2012). The harms of showing overwhelming results in advertisements do not end here. The social ideals created in the minds of both men and women are further leading to the isolation and social isolation of people who cannot meet the standard. .
