The third group of theories is characterized as “social” or “pragmatic” because communication is perceived as a social activity and so meaning is socially made and used (Chierchia and McConnell-Ginet 54). Tese theories provide a full meaning of meaning because meaning has dimensions of representation, dnotation, ad pragmatism (Chierchia and McConnell-Ginet 54). Fr the purposes of this paper, maning intersects its representational, dnotative, ad pragmatic dimensions and functions. Maning is about what the word means based on what society in general agrees it is, wat other symbols it can connected to, ad its actual uses in lived individual and collective lives.

Lnguage is the dominant way of making meaning. Pople make meaning by using language to think about meaning. Kfka’s novel, Te Trial, ivolves making meaning of his experience through language. H strives to understand the origins of the charges against him through the language system that he knows. Nvertheless, bcause of lack of information, h cannot derive meaning from his predicament. H is being punished for something that is meaningless to him, bt meaningful to his judges.

example is making meaning through reflection and analysis. Wen reading and analyzing something to find its meaning, sudents use language to brainstorm ideas and to come up with a thesis. Teir language gives them the words and mechanics that help them express their thoughts about the text being examined. Aide from the general process of making meaning, lnguage is used in its denotative form to understand meaning. Te word “sad” is about feeling the opposite of happy, a least in the denotative sense. Hppiness is about a state of or pleasure, dpending on the dictionary being used or the person defining it.

Lnguage helps people express what they want to say according to how other people can also understand it. Aide from making meaning out of the denotation of words, maning also comes from connotation. Cnnotation, b denotation, prtains to associated or connected feelings or ideas about a word. Ahome, fr instance, cnnotates a family, oten a happy one. Abad family cannot evoke feelings of home for some people. Lnguage helps people find meaning in words because of personal or social associations to it.
