Five Architecture and Urban Planning Trends of 2014 by James Bartolacci. It is evident from the author that design of structural buildings depends on past experiences and future planning to curb such issues in case they would occur. One of the topics includes designs include resilient designs along the coastline to curb hurricane scenarios such urban catalyst and landscape architecture involving living growing breakwaters. Second is emergent of off-the-grid architects to the city, third is the development of skyscrapers, fourth is more housing for low and mid class housing solutions, and lastly building a more pedestrian-friendly city in Francisco.

The first factor considered by the author delves into past devastation experiences in the New York we Hurrican Sandy struck the city. The designs were proposed to cater for devastating climatic changes that result in severe outbreaks. For example, the urban catalyst was a proposed to build hard walls along the airport terminals so as to prevent chocking the flights in an event of a storm. The second innovative trend is the encroaching of off-grid architects towards the city. These housings are meant to be characteristics of city outskirts since there is always ample environment as well as enough sunlight suitable for harnessing the sunlight. Due to distance and exclusion from city’s economic activities, individuals have opted to erect such housings around urban areas. No doubt, such moves offers options for reduction of carbon footprints since solar power is the cleanest source of energy.
Thirdly, the development projects in specific towns such as New York provides beautiful sceneries to inhabitants. Skyscrapers in specific is a common trend in New York City. According to Bartolacci, at least one tower is erected in Manhattan every other month (par 7). SHoP's skinny scraper located in New York is deemed as a million view scenery.
