Typically, in the 1940s and 1950s, a traditional family structure comprised of a man and woman along with their one or more offspring, and was widespread in the society as an ideal nuclear family form. It has been identified by many sociologists that this nuclear family fits well to the societal needs, than any other structure. However, this notion of family has changed in the contemporary days, particularly in the 21st century, owing to the diverse family structures that have arisen due to various cultural, economic and social factors. For instance, increase in women employment, poverty, rise in crime rates, illegal drug use and other social ills have contributed to single-parent households and other forms of family structure.Different variations of family structure include single parent homes, post-divorce families, homosexual families, cohabitation, friends as family, living apart but together (LATS) and several more. These changing family structures are expected to have some direct influence on the society as a whole. Therefore, in the contemporary society, the changes in the dynamics of families have notably impacted various social changes. In a way, it can be contended that the complex ideology of family life creates a stress over the society causing various impacts to its growth and future development.Family, as a universal social institution performs functions that no other social institution can substitute. It is assumed that a society depends on the ability of its individual members to think for themselves as well as their surroundings, contributing to the strength of the society (Marsh et al. Thus, the functions of family are predominantly important in shaping a child, and thereby for maintaining and shaping the future society. According to Murdock, family is observed to be a social group, characterized by economic co-operation, common residence and reproduction (Fulcher and Scott 2007, p.
