In order for Lena to safeguard herself ethically, she will need to consider the rights and privileges of her patients in the course of performing her duties. The medical profession stipulates that the patient’s rights of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence and justice are always safeguarded. The right of autonomy demands that patients should be allowed to make their own decisions. Beneficence, on the other hand, suggests that a nurse’s action should aim at doing good to the patients rather than performing actions that will bring harm to them. Nonmaleficence stipulates that no intentional harm should be brought to the patient while the concept of justice implies that the nurses in the profession should be fair to their patients. This is in terms of the hospital resources that are awarded to patients. The resources at their disposal should be used to ensure that all patients in attendance get the best medical care that can be availed (Rosenthal, 2004).According to the Nurses practice act, Lena should let the decision of the patient informing his spouse of his condition be his responsibility. This is because her disclosure of the patient’s private information will be infringing on his right of making that decision (Reinhardt, 2010). Lena’s decision to inform her sister of her boyfriend’s condition will bring more harm to the patient since it could end their relationship. However, it is ethical for her to disclose the condition to her sister since it could help her in avoiding the disease. Ethical and Legal Conduct: Lena Act.
