They state that advertisers take advantage of the vulnerability of school going children and teenagers to lead them into eating junk food which is a major cause of obesity. Cary (2007), sates that the Campaign for a Commercial – Free Childhood indicates that the advertisement Shrek the Third promotes the undertaking of unhealthy foods which is depicted by Shrek an animated ogre. Tis is complicated by the fact that Shrek is used in two advertisements that tend to advertise two different things. In one advertisement, Srek seems to advertise food by motivating children to eat junk foods, wile in another he seems to be discouraging them from eating junk foods.

Sch is the scenario which leads to the contradictions associated with advertisements. Minly, sch parallel advertisements tend to impact the society more negatively than positively. Tis is because the psychological appeal tends to drive towards the intake of junk foods by the children rather than their refusal to eat these foods that are unhealthy (Moton & Dumler, 2009). A it is well known, avertisements have many merits and in terms of the effects that they have on the society.

Te merits of advertisements cannot be overlooked nor overemphasized. Kein (1999) indicates one such merit which seeks to instill the virtue of being a brother’s keeper through vital messages in advertisements such as “friends don’t let friends drink and drive. ”This message in an advertisement is a means to instill the virtue of care. Te intelligence among the American population is claimed to have developed as a result of continuous advertisements that have spanned over the evolvement of Awider advertisement to the society is that the freedom of advertising leads to competiveness and advocates for creativity and innovativeness among the members of society.

Avertisements also aid government agencies to reach a vast amount of people in the society. Fr example, te US department of Human Services ran an advertisement that urged children to advertise in a bid to fight off obesity among children (Meltz, 2007). Avertisements have also had an important benefit in terms of helping people in the society to make decisions that are economically beneficial them.
