However some critics have criticized her for ignoring records and relying on Johnson’s tales whom they felt were unreliable tales. Her book The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys shows scholarship and here she connects the private relationships and public achievements of three generations of Kennedys. In No Ordinary Time she gives a behind-the-scenes account of White House during Roosevelt’s Presidency. Here Goodwin neither downplays nor overplays the affairs, deceits, and foibles but presents them naturally. In her interpretation of history she shows us the complexity of human motives and when she describes leaders and politicians there is no bitterness or cynicism. She rather empathizes with them. There is no recrimination, instead she tells us that politicians may be flawed and restricted because of their fears and insecurities but are not evil as such.Goodwin has always done a lot of homework and research before writing any of her books and hence she is able to give us fascinating details. For instance her 1997 memoir Wait Till Next Year is remarkable for its detail both in terms of descriptions of old Dodger games and anecdotes from Goodwins childhood. Here she delves into her childhood fears, her observations of Catholic rites and her family and neighborhood thereby giving us her interpretation of an era in American sports.In 2002, Goodwin was accused of plagiarism. She was accused of using phrases and sentences from books like Time to Remember, by Rose Kennedy; The Lost Prince, by Hank Searl; and Kathleen Kennedy: Her Life and Times, by Lynne McTaggart without acknowledging the sources. In her defense Goodwin wrote in Time Magazine ,“Though my footnotes repeatedly cited Ms.McTaggarts work, I failed to provide quotation marks for phrases that I had taken verbatim, having assumed that these phrases, drawn from my notes, were my words, not hers ……. The larger question for those of us who write history is to understand how citation mistakes can happen. Again in August 2002 it was reported that many passages from her book, No Ordinary Time were apparently taken directly from Joseph Lash’s book, Eleanor and Franklin, Hugh Gregory Gallagher’s FDR’s Splendid Deception, and other books. These allegations of plagiarism did damage her reputation; and forced her to recall the book and resign from various positions.
