Unless under some sort of licensing agreement that ensures a sizeable chunk of profit for each piece of merchandise sold, should the Big Box retailers choose to carry Urban Outfitters branded products, this strategy is in error. Each larger retailer devotes its resources to meeting the needs of specific markets or simply has mass appeal because of diverse merchandise offerings. Many of their names carry more weight with consumers than smaller retailers because of their previous successes in linking reputation with quality. Urban Outfitters’ current growth rate of five percent (Wilton, 2010) is not worth emulating by these larger retailers, at least not at the moment. Urban Outfitters also calls its merchandise “eclectic” (urbn.

com, 2009, p.5), which might give the impression of niche market products.Exclusivity is valuable because of the phenomenon known as conspicuous consumption, where individuals in society buy high quality products to illustrate their social or financial position to others. This trend in human nature, whether ethical or not, provides high profit to businesses that can successfully appeal to those who consume in favor of personal conspicuous consumption. Exclusivity is also valuable because it distinguishes one retailer from another through competitive marketing strategies. Having exclusive products lures the consumer into the store if they are relevant and promotional tools can be created that give the buyer motivation. Exclusivity, further, is also valuable because it can be used as a method of building top-quality public relations. By pre-promoting an upcoming exclusive product, buzz is the profit reward if done correctly.For some, shopping may only be an entertainment activity, however for many it is borne of necessity. In the household, clothing shopping, in this example for children, is conducted annually or perhaps even monthly as a result of regular and predictable growth patterns. Even though the parent is not seeking recreation, the sales result for the business is the same. Few could argue that regular children’s’ clothing shopping is only entertainment.Every marketer understands that buyers of different demographics or personal backgrounds have different shopping preferences and seek different types of products.
