I would advise Ed that the actual preparation of a meal for a client and the partaking of it with a client in her bedroom established a bond of intimacy that crosses the line of professionalism. This intimacy, while bringing temporary comfort and a pleasant feeling of connectedness, could actually make future tasks problematic for Ed. Ed needs to maintain his role as a provider of services for his client. I can understand the desire to cook for this client or participate in some sort of food preparation if was a dire situation.
But partaking of the meal together in the client’ s bedroom is beyond the bounds of professionalism. Ed needs to understand that caring for this elderly client in this way may seem like the right thing to do, but a better course of action would be to work to see that this elderly lady’ s long-term nutritional needs are met. The problem here isn’ t really one of impropriety. It is really one of learning how to effectively meet the needs of a client within the bounds of professionalism.
don’ t think that any consideration needs to be given to the fact whether it was an Ed or an Edna in this situation. From the example given, it is difficult to gauge Jill’ s response to Jack’ s request to come and live with her and her son Darren. If Jill’ s reaction was something to the effect of “ Wow, where did that come from? ” then as Jill’ s supervisor, I would need to reconstruct a timeline of events that would cause Jack to view Jill as a possible caregiver. Through Jack’ s eyes, Jill the person that has provided him with a measure of monetary gain, entertainment, friendship and spiritual guidance (at church).
In this conversation, I would work to help Jill see that these actions are sending a message to Jack that she (Jill) is willing to take on the role of caregiver. Once Jill could see that this was true, we could devise a plan to attempt to redirect these feelings to the established caregivers, namely the foster family with which Jack.
