Disputes that China has with its neighbors, Vietnam among them, and centering on China’s so-called 9-dash line that cuts through disputed territories along the South China Sea. That 9-dash line, moreover, is a unilateral claim by China that basically carves the South China Sea as Chinese territory, something that Vietnam and its neighbors in the region have been disputing with much bitterness. This is a major current event because of its potential to spark unrest and violence, as evidenced by the incidents outlined above. Internally too, the incident with the Chinese oil rig touched off a political and social dynamic within Vietnam that related to the way the Vietnamese authorities viewed its maritime and territorial boundaries. The territorial aspects of the dispute between the two countries, moreover, are complicated by long-standing trade relations between China and Vietnam, with China being a top trade partner for the country, and the Chinese having substantial investments in Vietnam. Those investments were imperilled by the China’s placement of the oil rig in disputed waters (Ransom; Vuving; Thayer).Another top current event in Vietnam is the partial lifting of an arms embargo by the United States, with limitations that the lifting applies to equipment for maritime purposes only. Again tied to its maritime territorial disputes with China and the incident of the oil rig and what it reflects about China’s increased level of assertiveness with regard to its claims on the South China Sea. While the United States is quick to point out that the lifting of the maritime arms embargo is not related to Vietnam’s disputes with China, the timing of the lifting of that embargo coincides with the recent tussle between Vietnam and China, and just follows the easing of the level of tensions between the two with the withdrawal of the oil rig from Vietnamese-claimed waters, as earlier discussed. Moreover, it is important to note that while Vietnam and China share a substantial common border, the embargo lifting only applies to sea-based equipment, and not to land-based arms. This limits the scope of the embargo lifting to the current scope of the territorial tiff between the two Asian nations (Wroughton and Shalal; Gordon; Holtz).A third top current event still involves Vietnam’s relations with China, but this time from the perspective of trade and finance. The latest development in economic relations between the two countries relate to the way
