Moreover, advertisements within social media provide a good opportunity for understanding gender construction within the society. According to Gauntlett (2008, p.214), the freedom of Saudi women, when it comes to advertisements on social media, is limited compared to that of men. He adds that Saudi women do not appear in advertisements in many cases, and when they appear, their bodies are always veiled to leave only their eyes in respect to the Islamic customs. On the other hand, men are freer compared to women. Their advertisement pictures are not as highly regulated as those of their female counterparts.Saudi men have more freedom in using social media compared to their female counterparts. Examination of use of semiotics among Saudi men and women in media content can be depended upon to confirm the hypothesis.There are several studies that have been dedicated to study the gender-based contribution of Saudi population in media content. Abouzeid (2008, p.542) provides a research findings on the religious customs that prevent Saudi women from practicing the same freedom that their male counterparts have when it comes to use of media platforms. The author argues that Saudi women are portrayed as agents of change through upholding the Islamic religious customs. Therefore, whatever contributions they make on social media should be highly respectful to the Islamic customs lest they face punishment.Moreover, Edwards (2013, p.318) argues that Hijab provides the expected dress code for both Muslim men and women. They are all expected to dress in a manner that upholds their dignity. Women are expected to veil themselves in order to avoid displaying their beauty to other men that are not their husbands. This factor has been the main reason as to why Saudi women are not prone to advertisements on social media. They act in a manner that does not violate their religious customs hence avoiding punishments. Abouzeid (2008, p.413) adds that Muslim women are expected to treat their male counterparts with high standards of respect and being submissive. This factor explains why they are not allowed to confront men in conversations on social media platforms.This study will depend on online survey and use of questionnaires in order to collect data relevant to the topic.
