Conflict between Romantic and Victiorian Values in Wuthering Heights

The novel shows that religious values attached to Christianity had no importance in Victorian times as people were more inclined to materialistic possessions. Tis statement in the book (Bronte 20)“ I was moved to rise and denounce Jabes Branderham as the sinner of the sin than no Christian need pardon” reveals irreligious tone of the story. I the novel, Hndley despises Heathcliff as he is preferred son of Mr. Te writing tells about a family story wherein cruelty, rvenge, cld and harsh abusive treatment of human takes a front Te story further portrays slavery, were Heathcliff the foster son of Mr.

Ernshaw is a slave and Hindley turns out to be a ruthless master. Savery was a prominent characteristic of Victorian era and the novel “Wuthering heights” is an absolute representation of it. Aart from this, te character Heathcliff is an outstanding example of Victorian novel character as he is projected as a poor orphan who is dejected, ot casted and deserted by his revengeful foster brother. I the novel, tere is also oppression between father and son, Mr.

Ernshaw gives prior attention and affection to Heathcliff who is an orphan. Te novel “Wuthering heights” apart from Victorian values also depicts romanticism. Tere are many instances in the novel where various characters showcases passion, lve, eotion and imagination. Te author of the novel has the experience of Victorian and romantic period and had spend all of her adulthood in Victorian period. Te plot of “Wuthering heights” has two love affair; oe is between Catherine and Heathcliff and another between Catherine, Lnton and Edgar. Aong these love te love affair between Catherine and Heathcliff reflects romanticism.

Te quote in the book(Bronte 137)“It is not in him to be loved like me: hw can she love in him what he has not” reveals the passionate nature of the story. Dring romantic period women were regarded inferior to men and shown to be excellent only in domestic affairs. Hre we can see that Catherine reflected a trait of romantic period and was given no rights to choose her life. Te romantic period is displayed as an age of and sufferings, wich is a prominent theme of the novel “Wuthering Heights”.
