An example might be when observing a child playing out a fight between a kitten and a monster where the kitten appears to be winning, the therapist would reflect, ‘ it looks that kitten is angry with that monster. It seems like the monster is always taking things away from the kitten’. The therapist suspect the kitten represents the child and the monster the parent. The therapist is trying to lead the child to that understanding or a rejection of that theory. There are three levels of interpretative statements. Attention statements bring the child’s awareness to the concrete concepts.Situational statements attempt to connect certain situations to specific behaviors. Transference interpretations attempt to show the child how is conflicts are reflected in relationships (Schaefer & O’Conner, 1993).The toys used must be suitable for the child’s age. The recommended choices are often such things as paper crayons, paints, magazines for cutting and some simple figures such as animals of all ages, family figures and commonly used items representative of different adult roles (Hutt, 1970) .It must be remembered that Jungian theory has its origins in psychoanalytic theory. Carl Jung was a student of Freud for many years. The biggest difference between the two theory is often seen through the difference in the two men’s religious beliefs, Freud being Jewish and Jung being Christian. Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious is likened to the Christian belief of the communion of saints. Therefore one finds a spiritual feel to the Jungian theory. Jung explained the nature of the collective unconscious as constantly evolving with its archetypal manifestations. Therefore the process of individuation is constantly evolving. Individuation is the progression from psychic fragmentation toward wholeness. The individual must be aware of and reconcile opposites (Jung, 1964). This process is motivated by a psychospiritual need for growth and spiritual evolution. This growth takes place through innate symbols or archetypes.Jungian play therapy is a spiritualized approach to counseling children and emphasizes symbolic meaning (Jung 1959). Jung believed that children strive for a whole personality and to do that they use symbol identification from within their respective situation.
