Mainstream media recognizes the potential for greater detail and a more intimate connection from reports by citizen journalists and therefore seek to partner with citizen journalists. There are several definitions of citizen journalism, idicating that citizen journalism is a complex phenomenon (Temple, 2013, p For the purpose of this research, ctizen journalism the dissemination of news, oinions, potographs, vdeos and debates by individuals who are not professional journalists (Allan, 2009, p Citizen journalists are described as average citizens who discover and share details of news-worthy incidents that take place where they live and/or work (Burns, 2013, pTechnological advancements have enabled citizen journalism, epowering members of the public to collect and share information that often ‘challenges official versions’ or compliments them (Greer and McLaughlin, 2010, p For example, athough journalists did a remarkable job covering the September 11, 2001 terrorist the US, pesenting graphic depictions of the events and the aftermath.

Hwever, i the meantime, te news industry was experiencing a new phenomenon: ctizen journalism. Individual members of the public were using technology, epecially the internet to share and report eye-witness accounts, oten accompanied by videos and photographs (Gillmor, 2004, pPreviously, wen a newsworthy event occurred, te public had to wait for the media to arrive at the event, gther information and photographs or videos and then share the results with the public. Nwadays, i an individual has camera and an internet connection the story and the photographs or videos can be shared immediately before the mainstream media even learns of the event.

Some official media outlets are capitalizing on the potential for on-the-spot, istantaneous reporting facilitated by citizen journalism. Fr example, CN maintains a community page known as iReports which permits citizens to share stories and photograph/videos of events that they happen to witness or know something about (Brown, 2013, p.
