Donald does not make the book boring by organizing all personal account together but rather he has formed the book like a narrative which is easy to read.The book offers a fresh perspective into Lincoln’s life. Previous biographies written on Lincoln had focused mainly on the Civil War. Donald provides fresh content in this respect. He explores Lincoln’s life as no other biographer has done. He discusses how the leader was formed. Donald writes about parts of Lincoln’s life that had been obscure before such as his early childhood which Lincoln himself was not interested in discussing.The book is considered to be the most acclaimed biography of Lincoln. This is because Donald has consulted both primary and secondary research. For primary research, Donald takes information from Lincoln’s own letters and also from what Lincoln’s contemporaries had to say about him.One loophole in the book is how Donald has projected Lincoln. Donald shows Lincoln as a passive leader who could not control the events taking place around him and merely took reactionary steps. By declaring Lincoln as a passive leader, Donald to a certain extent diminishes the power of Lincoln. One can call into question whether Lincoln was actually a passive leader considering that he was able to command one of the most significant events in the history of United States.However, Donald biography of Lincoln has had considerable effect on the readers. People are able to see how Lincoln’s personality as a leader was shaped. Previously biographies had focused on Lincoln’s actions rather than his motives and thoughts. In this manner, this biography is considered to the best biography written for President Lincoln.David Donald’s credibility as a biographer had been established long before he wrote Lincoln. He won two Pulitzer Prizes for his biographies of Thomas Wolfe and Charles Sumner. A biography of Lincoln written by David Donald would be considered highly authentic based on the fact that Donald was part of the editorial board for the Papers of Abraham Lincoln. Also Donald received his PhD under the mentorship of James Randall, a leading Lincoln scholar.All in all, this book is a recommended read for people interested in History and Lincoln.
