Conidiophore bears the uninucleate asexual spores called the conidia, which appear rough and range between 3-4 µm, these conidiophores are short and appear brown in colour. They are approximately 60-150 µm in length. Sexual ascospores are also part of their reproduction. The conidia formed by the organism are normally yellow in colour when formed but turns to dark green as it matures, Broad Institute (2005). The Hyphae of A. nidulans are septate and hyaline. The sexual stage of reproduction produces brown cleistothecia which are 100-250 µm. Ascospores are found to be brown in colour and lenticular.( de Hoog, 2000)nidulans is very much known for its unique nutritional need for its growth. This organism has a capability to utilize the nitrogen source available in the environment like ammonia and glutamine for its basic nutrition. In order to hydrolyze the compound, this organism possesses many different enzymes and pathways that help in acquiring the available nitrogen for its growth and metabolism. This property of nitrogen acquisition of A.nidulans is characteristic of the areA gene, which regulates the production of enzymes needed for this nitrogen metabolism. The mutation in the area gene showed no nitrogen utilization by this organism, The EMBO Journal (1997).The comparatively small genome size and importance of Aspergillus nidulans has created a need to sequence the genome and to extensively study them.nidulans strain is closely related to other Aspergillus species like A. flavus, and A. fumigatus whose significance is felt abundantly in the medical and food industries (Broad Institute. The genetic system of A. nidulans is well developed that it can hold few genes in it through transformation. In these aspects this organism helps in understanding the biology and gene regulation of any gene from an organism. The alcA gene required for the gene regulation of alcohol dehydrogenase is well studied in this organism. Citric acid production is a widely accepted industrial importance of this organism. The large-scale production of this compound with good aeration has reduced the laborious work of using two different fermentors for the production of citric acid. These organisms are also well known in the production of industrial enzymes like amylases, proteases and lipases.Other than the production of industrially important products used in different industries these organisms are also potential disease causing agents.
