The young boy is looking at his father with a look of admiration and love. The father is on the telephone but has a pleased expression on his face. It is clear that he is full of love for his son. The costumes that both father and son are wearing may be classified as smart casual to business-like. Certainly the boy is clad in a full sleeved shirt with cuffs turned out and a waistcoat. He has on a pair of full length trousers. His hair too is styled and combed well. He is slightly hunched towards his father as if listening to his every word. The father is seated in a chair, dressed impeccably in a dark suit and white shirt while his left hand exposes his ring and his watch which is a Patek Philippe. The table also has the normal paraphernalia connected with a businessman- an open notepad, a fountain pen, with the corner of a keyboard and a wireless mouse also in view. The curtains have been opened to let in some light.In a connotative analysis of an advertisement, we endeavor to find out what is the story being told. It is said that a picture is a thousand words, but that the meaning has to be deciphered by the onlooker. That is why artists are often asked to give the meanings and inspirations behind their own paintings, from their own perspectives. It is clear that the picture gives the impression of a successful businessman, placed at his desk and conducting business on the telephone. At the same time he is smiling at his young son, who is there just within arm’s reach. The son’s admiration for the father and the father’s love for the son are evident from their facial expressions. The way they are dressed and the father’s accessories and suiting bear all the hallmarks of a successful businessman. The son too is smartly dressed in waistcoat, full sleeved shirt and trousers and it is clear that the father wants him to stand for something and make an impression on whoever would see him. This attitude of gentility is being passed on from father to son. We are also directed to the message of the advertisement, which states that ‘you never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely take care of it for the next generation’. Thus the connection between the generation of father and son is shown to be related to the message of the advertisement. They are sharing their experiences and traditions, and by passing on the Patek Philippe watch to his son one day,
