In the turn of the 19th century, the United States embarked on a mission to expand westwards into foreign territories including the North American Continent. This historical move was initially set out with good motives and many perceived it to be a means of spreading the American systems into other states. The systems referred to in this context include democracy and its functions in the political landscape and outside this, the religious and cultural aspects as well (Rosenberg, 2011). However, American imperialism, whose heart was the urge for expansion critiqued to have been driven by economic, political, geographic and cultural interests.
The arguments justifying the American Expansion are mainly based on the notion of America Exceptionalism. This notion posits that America is exceptionally placed and thus responsible too spread its systems across the world. However, there is much more to unearth with regards to the defensive motive behind the American Expansion. To begin with, territorial expansion of America yielded a huge economic portion for America. The United States above all other interest pursued to achieve areas to expand explore new markets in other areas much more than other state interests.
The Westward expansion was landmarked by the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 by Jefferson. The politics and aggressive efforts to purchase Louisiana clearly present the defense that forced America into making the purchase. Taking back on the background to this, America as a state bank on its ability to expand to the west and develop international markets. This great economic vision was threatened when France gained control over Louisiana with the threat to block America’ s access to the Orleans Port (Burnett, 2005).
This threat apparently was a blow so huge for the United States Economy. It meant no more river transport on the River Mississippi and no ventures into international markets. The grave threat that this French revolution pronounced on the United States ultimately fueled the aggression to expand.
