One of the globally accepted primary responsibilities of the United Nations is the ability to help maintain international security and peace. Previously, the existence and the prevalence of cold war among some of the world’s major economies was one of the challenges that the United Nations encountered in achieving its objectives. The first years of operation were filled with turbulent waves since the United Nations was highly dependent on some of these nations in they had the necessary fighting power. Since the conclusion of the cold war, the United Nations security concerns have become more aggressive in the perpetuation of stability and peace in the world economies.
However, some of the world debacles such as those in Somalia, Bosnia, and the current situation happening in Syria has led the need to evaluate some of the obstacles facing the UN peacekeeping operations. The United Nations’ objective of maintaining a successful peacekeeping operation is at a critical juncture owing to these missteps that have had the world question its abilities. The Security Council has found itself under pressure from major economies asking it to respond and act on the cases affecting these countries and especially those in Africa. 10 The UN peacekeeping operations have had to be conducted with unwitnessed scope and ambition as they strive to solve these challenges.
Investigations and audits into their actions have found substantial incidents of failure in their operations due to various factors. 11 One of the primary factors is that the United Nations lacks the necessary fighting power. A meeting held by the United Nations in the General Assembly Hall seeking to discuss some of the lessons learned from the previous peacekeeping activities discovered that the UN could not handle the peace enforcement operations.
The discovery came after an analysis of some of the failures that the UN has experienced including the rising number of civilian and soldiers casualties. Some of the considered failures during this meeting included those of Mozambique, El Salvador, and Namibia. In the midst of uncertainties, danger, and chaos, any individual soldier is required to overcome some of their greatest fears and rise above their personal circumstances in the pursuit of realizing their goals and objectives.
