Ivan decided to enjoy his pleasant life decorously. Despite this, Ivan managed to end up with a girl and a boy after several births and deaths of his children (Rowe 107). After many years of struggle her daughter turned 16 and his boy was attending school. With higher expectations in life, Ivan decided to look for a better job. He joined the decoration industry. Everything goes well until one day he slips and falls. He injures his left side of the body but the pain disappears. Later on Ivan developed back pains that made him lose interest in playing cards.
Eventually he stopped working and became paralyzed unable to move. He was then diagnosed with an appendix problem which made him motionless since he could not coordinate any of his body parts. While nearing his death he developed strong hatred for his wife and people around him including the doctors. Only his son appeared to appease him together with Gerasim who was appointed to take care of him after he was unable to move. To him life has become so hypocritical and he decided to battle his pain by taking opium.
He later realizes that the drug he is using is wasting him even more. He becomes bitters with life and regrets his wasted life. As a way of showing his nearing end he dreams of a black sack that has no bottom. This is a sign and a preparation of his death. In addition to this he decides to take communion as a way of reconnecting with his maker since he realizes that his time is over on earth after wasteful years.
The last 3 days before his death Peter screams in agony possibly regretting that he has been living a life of hypocrisy (Jahn 76). His son touches his hand and suddenly it dawns to him that he has been living an empty life. During his numerous screams and agony the man encounters a revelation where he finally falls at the bottom of the empty sack. He then sees a bright light which comforts him. He finally decides to settle for the comfort since he had suffered does much.
During this time he also realizes that living in peace and compassion is the key to success. He decides to seek peace with his wife. He does not hate her anymore. He then decides to go back to the bright light where he dies peacefully even though he is seen to be in agony. The author has been very successful in employing several themes in this story as a way of showing us how Ivan prepared for his death. Death is inevitable according to the author. The author through various instances depicts Ivan scared of his death.
Before he dies he decides to reconcile with his wife whom he had hated since they got married.
