The recent past activities of the company can be looked upon, it can be noticed that company has undertaken strict steps regarding the maintenance of high standard in the corporate social responsibilities. They have announced in their recent amended policy, that in the upcoming years, the Walmart will not make any deal with any company who do not follow a standard corporate social responsibility (Elder and Dauvergne, 2015). The Walmart has taken a number of significant steps in the recent years to fulfil their corporate responsibilities towards the Indian society.
However the activities initiated by the group vary across the societies and the communities they are willing to serve. As par the amendments, the stores of the group have taken oath to take social and moral responsibilities significantly for their customer base, employees and the stakeholders as well (Elder and Dauvergne, 2015). Walmart has adopted some key instruments as measuring tools of their corporate social responsibility for the self assessment purpose. These are corporate citizenship index, index of sustainable development and the business excellence model.
5 to 7 per cent of the total profit earned by Walmart is spent on the several CSR initiatives (Dutta and Singh, 2013). There are more than 50 self help groups working under different kinds of poverty alleviation programs initiated by Walmart. Among them 20 groups are directly engaged with income generation programs of micro enterprise. The company has also taken care about the micro women empowerment program and initiated the awareness across 700 villages of the country (Matusitz and Reyers, 2010). Walmart significantly contributes to a number of social welfare organisations.
The Walmart foundation have donated 50 lakhs rupees to help the small scale farmers, including 900 women, in Tamil Nadu, where their current project cashew value chain has been taking place. These CSR initiatives will be performed along with the help of a leading international humanitarian organisation. The Centre for hearing impaired children, national Association for the blind etc all of welfare organisations get monetary assistance from Walmart. In 2015, the company has donated 2 billion USD in US also to fight against the hunger problem in that country (Elder and Dauvergne, 2015).
