The company had put up nets around their factories and made employees and workers sign pledges that they would not suicide, instead of understanding the reasons which drove workers to kill themselves and developing strategies for improving job satisfaction. The human resource executives must consider setting realistic targets for employees (NPR, 2012). The occurrences at Foxconn are crucial for human resource management professionals and students to analyse so that they do not commit similar mistakes. Employees are important resources for organizational productivity and it is essential that managers and administrators treat them humanely and not merely as “money making machines”.
It is essential for organizations to understand that if they exert too much pressure over employees, they are likely to encounter high rates of turnover. The present study thus evaluates the negative impacts of poor working conditions and high performance pressure upon employees and how such aspects can be prevented. With increasing rates of competition and internationalization, firms are seen to devise strategies through which the costs of production can be minimised. Many firms are seen to develop production and operations centres at developing nations such as China and India, with lower emphasis on working conditions.
Employees are also pressurized to work for long durations, with little focus towards their needs, so as to maximise returns. Such treatment of employees and workers are considered highly unethical and human resource managers should take stern measures towards its prevention (Morschett, Schramm-Klein and Zentes, 2009). In order to ensure that employees are not over pressurized with work, HR managers should set rational and achievable goals. It is also essential to ensure that employees are not engaged with work for very long durations, as this may impact their personal lives, leading them to leave the organization.
It is also essential for the HR managers to ensure that proper working conditions are provided, giving special attention to the safety needs of employees. Working conditions directly impact the quality of performance and hence HR mangers should focus upon the developing a conducive environment for working (Chan, Pun and Selden, 2013).
