The chapter revealed his surprising beliefs about the force of development. The arguments stated that development is complete when a community is able to fulfill the basic needs of each individual. He argued that development occurs through the mechanism of action and reaction because the growth of individual results in devolution of another and therefore, the societies are made up of hunters and preys.
The modern day anthropologists collectively argue that Marshall’s concept of humanity is crude because it does not value the traditional virtue theory that states that human beings are fully capable of practicing compassion and the ability to practice ethics increase with economic growth and intellectual development.
