While information technology was still in its initial stage, several people including David Kirkpatrick visualized a future that workplace interactions will be virtual something that clearly comes out when he says “You will be able to work efficiently as a member of a group wherever you have your computer. As computers become smaller and more powerful, that will mean anywhere” (Rayport 2011). This has become a reality with freelancing employees in America alone being over 30 million. These employees are now equipped with smartphones. Organizations have been forced to support the employees and allow them build their businesses or rather undertake their responsibilities through social networking sites.
Development of BYOC and BYOD which connotes “bring your own computer” and “bring your own device” respectively developed and information technology is now the way of collaboration. The impact of instant messaging, apparently, is one of the predominant ways that information technology has enhanced collaboration in organizations. Managers in the present organizational environments have been put under pressure to provide more powerful ways of collaboration, and the ways attributable to information technology have proven to be the most appropriate (Mohapatra 2013). Noteworthy, web 2.0 is one of the pertinent technologies that have contributed to the development of virtual organizations (McKinsey 2009).
The implication of the change ranges from increased internal efficiency to increased collaboration with stakeholders. The collaboration has helped more employees to come into contact on a daily basis, but at a lesser cost. When used effectively, this kind of information technology encourages participation in decision-making by enhancing idea sharing. Through this, the organization’s knowledge pool deepens and hence the organization can undertake huge projects at a lower cost.
Through information technology, the organization can also link with suppliers, communicate with them, and create strong bonds with them. This reduces travel, communication, and operations costs while at the same time increasing an organization’s profitability and market coverage (Edery, Edery & Mollick 2009).
