Lott (2010), in his book, More Guns Less Crime, he observes that, “there is a strong negative relationship between the number of law-abiding citizens with permits and the crime rate—as more people obtain permits there is a greater decline in violent crime rates. ” He supports his statement by stating statistics indicating that the gun laws in various states have at least contributed to reduced cases of murder rate declines (by 3%), rape (by 2%), and robbery (by2 %) (Lott, 2010). When law-abiding citizens are issued with guns, the criminals become aware that they are not the only ones in possession of guns, therefore they are very cautious when engaging in criminal activities.
The outcome is reduction in criminal activities. For example, in Lumberton, Mississippi a man stabbed a gas station clerk and attempted to flee. A customer in the store, who had a concealed carry license, drew his weapon and held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived. The suspect was not expecting that person to have a weapon, but thanks to Mississippi allowing concealed carry permits, that suspect did not get away (Ward, 2014). A major setback in the handling of guns appears to be contributed by poor implementation of the prevailing laws.
The government’s attempts to continue developing more gun control laws is quite out of place, given that the current laws are poorly implemented. The aspect of purchase of guns should not arise in the first place. The presence of guns in the hands of citizens does not amount to insecurity; therefore, what needs to be done is to increase the number of guns that are held by responsible citizens in order to neutralize the effect of the criminals with guns.
On the other hand, allowing the sale of guns would amount to increasing their availability among the criminals. Both the federal and state government need to have better enforcement of the gun control laws. Rather than just running a background check, signing papers, and having a waiting period, I think it would be better if citizens went through some basic gun training before they are issued with the guns. Therefore, it becomes a rule that before purchasing a weapon, it is mandatory that one should have gone through gun safety classes.
That along with the other requirements should then allow a person to obtain a weapon. Criminals are able to obtain a weapon no matter how many gun laws the government passes. Therefore, the availability of guns should be highly restrictive. Another
