The terms and the processes that they describe are supported by the founding Treaty of Rome that states that the member states should work towards a closer union. Widening/ broadening project was included in the enlargement policy of the EU especially regarding a candidate considering EU membership. Broadening relates to the reinforcement of the EU institutions and their internal policies. For example, the policy of the EU states that the members of the family should join forces and their capabilities to enhance their welfare and prosperity as a union rather than individual states (Sapir, 2011:1204).

This means that by joining the union or through integration, individual member states get more opportunities to prosper socially, economically and politically because they widen or broaden their scope of doing business. This occurs because more markets would be opened for the member states allowing them to sell their products easily and also buy those that they need without many barriers. However, it should be stated that this does not occur with isolation of the deepening aspect. The same EU policy on integration sated that to realize the full benefits of enlargement/ widening, the community has to ensure that the policies and institutions work more efficiently and implement democratic processes that assure better response to the needs of the people of the Union.

This opens up the aspect of deepening in the sense that the internal or national policies were to be aligned with the policies of the union to ensure that they work in a harmonious way to encourage widening to occur without much problem or unnecessary barriers (Best, 2010:34). The economic reason was the first point of the EU’s integration process.

A candidate was required to ensure that its attention is to develop strategies that would make improve its economy as well as contribute to the improvement of the other member states of the Union. A common market would present many advantages to member countries. For instance, it would provide common tariffs, free movement of goods and services, capital, custom unions, employment and labour among others. The use of a common currency in form of the Euro would provide and strengthen the important dynamics for the realization of a prosperous economy for all the members.

The advantages provided by this system would ensure the economic and political stability
