I will employ an intrinsic approach on the case study since I have an objective of comprehending a particular case, in this case, a program because the case itself is of interest (Stake, 1995). Notably, a case may be considered to be of interest given it is ordinary or if it has distinct features (Stake, 1995). A sole pre-college program in South Jersey by the name Upward Bound, in Rowan University, is the only college program that serves strictly English Language Learners from Camden city. For this reason, it is unique. For this study, the circumstance under scrutiny will be ELLs in the Upward Bound program.

Foregoing students who are currently at Rowan University and had been involved in the program will be the subject matter. Various data collection techniques would be adopted in the collection of detailed information by the case study researchers. I will adopt the use of semi-structured, flexible interviews for this study. Additionally, I will reexamine documents obtained from the focus group of prevalent ELL at the place where the study will be undertaken which is Rowan University.

To be more specific, interviews that will be undertaken will be audiotaped, the tapes will then be transcribed into word files, the word files will undergo scrutiny, and finally, data will be coded for developing themes. The focus groups will play a critical role in the provision of fluid discussions and broad descriptions of interpretations and personal experiences. This owes to their open-ended and emergent nature (Berg, 1998; Morgan, 1998; Madriz, 2005). In order to study individual and social institutions that are unknown, specific, or have become conventional, qualitative description serves as a necessity (Rowles & Reinharz, 1988).

Focus groups are characterized by the use of interactive groups to provide awareness that would be less attainable without the interactions prevalent in a group (Morgan, 1988). The cooperation in a focus group allows for brainstorming and communication among the participants. This, as a result, may lead to the discussion of a large number of issues, opinions, topics, as well as ideas (Berg, 1998). I chose the focus group method as the preferred method for this study as it serves as the key to socially-constructed opinions, articulated views, attitudes and experiences of the participants.

This will, in turn, assist me to understand how they elucidate fear appeals (Berg, 1998).
